Installation (Inkjet print on tracing paper, Float stopper, Fishing line, Bank sinker)
I took the original polaroids during a family road trip back in 2022. It took place when my uncle and cousin from the Philippines could come to Australia on a tourist visa, invited by my parents and auntie abroad with us. The photo, printed on tracing paper, mimics a float despite the fishing rig carrying a bank sinker. It continues to remind me of this brief time together.
Recently, I’ve been looking back through family albums, tracing the history of my family’s migration outside of the Philippines, and later to Australia in 2007. I’ve been reflecting on the conditional circumstances that allowed certain loved ones to be together, and the photographs that became possible through them.
Alongside these personal archives, I’ve been searching online for brochures, advertisements, guidelines and other documents relating to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Australian migration from the 90s onwards.
